- Plant of the month: Cymbidium
The Cymbidium, an orchid native to Asia, has found its way into many homes and hearts around the world. Its natural growth on trees and rocks in countries like China, Japan, and India, has contributed to its robust nature and versatility.
What makes the Cymbidium different from a normal orchid?
It is not only its impressive size, but also its ability to thrive in cooler temperatures. Unlike many other orchids, the Cymbidium is more resistant to lower temperatures, making it a popular choice among orchid lovers.
The Cymbidium season, which extends from late autumn to early spring, brings beautiful flowers in various colours such as white, pink, yellow and green. A time of flowering that can transform any space into a colourful spectacle.
Cymbidiums are not only decorative plants, but are also often used on special occasions. Their impressive flowers make them popular for bridal bouquets and as table decorations at events. As houseplants, they add a touch of elegance to any environment. Besides being a beautiful houseplant, the Cymbidium is also mostly grown for its flowers.
How do you care for a potted Cymbidium?
The Cymbidium thrives best in a spot with sufficient light, but avoid direct sunlight. It is important that the Cymbidium does not have wet roots. When watering the plant, it is essential that the water can drain easily from the pot. An effective method for this is to immerse the plant, including the growing pot, in water for a few minutes. During the flowering period, it is possible to add extra nutrients to the water. Make sure that excess water can drain well from the root ball.
Cymbidiums thrive best at temperatures between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. They can tolerate lower temperatures, but frost is harmful to them. As for potting soil, it is advisable to use a well-drained mixture specially formulated for orchids. This promotes good air circulation around the roots and prevents waterlogging.
Follow these simple steps for a beautiful Cymbidium plant:
- Place the Cymbidium in a bright spot, avoiding direct sunlight.
- When watering, immerse the plant in water for a few minutes.
- Add extra nutrition during the flowering period and drain excess water well.
- Keep the temperature between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius, avoid frost.
- Use well-draining orchid substratum to prevent waterlogging.
